Everglades

Mom was bugging me to come visit. So I flew to Miami. To spice things up, I took a side trip in the Everglades. I have wanted to do some backcountry camping there for some time.

As it turned out, my camping wasn't exactly "back country". Notice the picnic table. However, I did have a meager shelter which offered zero protection from...
GATORS!!!
This guy walked right past my bunk in the early morning. It was kind of rare to see one moving. They usually spend most of there time lying around, like this big guy.

In addition to the cold blooded predators, there were a number of beautiful species of birds.

This ibis was just finishing his lunch of fresh fish when I caught him with the camera. I also saw many anhingas, cormorants, flamingos (in flight) and this funny little guy.

My first night in Florida, I stayed at the Everglades International Hostel which is a great place to get your bearings and meet new friends (who usually need a ride somewhere). Matthew and Sibylle Fuchs are on a 9 month tour of the states from their native Switzerland.

I learned two Swiss-German words from them which may come in handy for you someday.
Shnovel -- beak
Shnauzen -- snacking
